Founding Fathers
Our History
Prior to April 1978, ambulance service in the Bulverde and Spring Branch areas was provided by New Braunfels, as Bexar County would not cross county lines. No one needs to spend much time thinking about how long that took, especially in bad weather. In the interest of patient care, a group of dedicated individuals worked to create a local ambulance service. The group pushed for increased standards in training, communications and patient care.
From 1978 to 1981, volunteers would take turns taking the ambulance home to respond to emergency calls for service. In 1980, the ambulance service received a gift of just over two acres of land along US 281 north from the Otto Fromme family. Plans for construction of a building to house the ambulances, training center and sleeping quarters for volunteers on duty were quickly designed to begin shortly after January 1, 1981. Construction continued through 1981 and the new home for EMS base operations was completed by March 1982. In 1999 construction began to modify the original structure by adding an additional 5000 square feet of space. This space houses administrative offices, crew's living & sleeping quarters, and a state of the art training facility. This facility is the headquarters for EMT training, basic as well as advanced, for many of the area's rural EMS & Fire organizations.
